Band camp is just around the corner, and that means it’s time to gear up—mentally and physically—for long days, high energy, and high temps. Whether you’re a rookie or a returning vet, preparation can make or break your band camp experience. So here are 7 essential tips to help you thrive at Viking Band Camp!
1. Pack Smart: Essentials You’ll Regret Forgetting
Before you even step on the field, pack your bag with the following must-haves:
- WATER (and lots of it!) – Hydration is your best friend. Aim to drink 8 oz every 15–20 minutes during outdoor blocks. Bring a durable, refillable water bottle. (Did we mention water?)
- Comfortable Athletic Shoes – Your feet will be putting in major miles. Stick to supportive athletic shoes—no sandals or flip-flops allowed.
- Sunscreen + Hat – Apply sunscreen before camp and reapply throughout the day. A hat is also great for sun protection, especially during outdoor rehearsal blocks.
- Your Instrument – Sounds obvious, but yes, people do forget. Don’t be that person.
- Instrument Accessories – Think reeds, valve oil, sticks, slide grease, a small towel, and emergency repair tools (if you have them).
- Pencils – You’ll need them for marking music and drill. Bring a few—you will lose one.
- Snacks – Go for high-energy snacks like trail mix, granola bars, fruit, or crackers. Keep it light and rinse your mouth before playing again.
2. Acclimate to the Outdoors
If you’ve been living indoors all summer, now’s the time to get used to the heat. Start spending time outside daily—walking, jogging, or even just standing with your instrument in play position. Gradually build up your endurance to avoid heat-related issues when camp hits full swing.
3. Fuel Your Body Right
Marching band is a workout. Eat a balanced breakfast and continue fueling throughout the day with foods high in protein, complex carbs, and natural sugars. Avoid greasy or super sugary snacks—they’ll only slow you down.
Pro tip: Bananas, almonds, apples, and PB&J sandwiches are all band camp MVPs.
4. Dress for Success
Your outfit matters. Choose clothes that are:
- Breathable
- Lightweight
- Moisture-wicking (think athletic wear)
- Comfortable for long rehearsals and movement
Avoid jeans or restrictive clothing, and bring an extra shirt if you sweat a lot.
5. Stretch Before You Sweat
Most camps include stretching and warm-ups—but don’t wait for day one to start. Take a few minutes each day before camp starts to learn a proper stretching routine. You’ll reduce your risk of injury and feel more prepared when the real work begins.
6. Be Early, Stay Ready
In Viking Band, “Early is on time, and on time is late.” Plan to arrive 10–15 minutes before call time. Use that window to:
- Apply sunscreen
- Refill your water bottle
- Warm up your instrument
- Review your music or drill
- Mentally prepare to bring the energy
7. Stay Positive and Keep Moving Forward
Band camp is hard—but it’s also one of the most rewarding parts of the season. You’ll grow stronger, build bonds, and get better every single day. Expect challenges, stay coachable, and support your fellow Vikings.
Let’s make this season one to remember—show up prepared, give it your all, and let that Viking pride shine!
